About Khem Karan

Khem Karan is a small Nagar Panchayat town in Tarn Taran District of Punjab state. It is located approximately 59 kms away from headquarter city of Tarn taran and 69 kms from capital city of Amritsar. The town is not very developed town as such and has to cope with many infrastructure problems, but it enjoys a very peculiar place in the history of modern India. Today just like another town of Punjab it is also witnessing infrastructural developments in many areas.

History of Khem Karan

During 1965 Indo-Pakistani War one very small town of Punjab state came into prominence. This small town was none other than Khem Karan. This town witnessed what Military Generals tout as one of the largest tank battle ever in military history. Nearly 1000 tank battles from Indian military and same number of battles from Pakistani military engaged in a gruesome military confrontation for nearly one month. Causing unforgettable destruction and mayhem all around.

A tank battle and military confrontation of this magnitude has been witnessed only twice in military history. Once during World War Two and another time during Gulf war of 1991. For witnessing rarest of rare military confrontation Khem Karan deservedly owns a very special place in annals of military history. A military distinction that probably no other Indian town or city enjoys.

Healthcare services in Khem Karan are relatively very poor. Decades of lackluster economic development never allowed this town to improve its healthcare services. The most adverse impact of this has been on critical services of hospitals. Although there are quite a few hospital in this town, but they are all very well ill equipped. Khem Karan’s patients therefore have to travel to other cities in case of urgency. Luckily for them well developed cities like Amritsar and Tarn Taran are not located very far away from Khem Karan. Besides, Khem Karan is very well connected to these cities via train and bus services. At least on the front of chemist shops this town does boost decent numbers. As for General clinics are concerned, then their numbers are also steadily rising.

Transportation in Khem-Karan

Khem Karan has somewhat decently reliable transportation services. There are decent numbers of auto rickshaws to take care of its local commuters. But more importantly Khem Karan has a small railway station that is directly connected to Amritsar and Tarn Taran cities. Khem Karan’s train connectivity to especially Amritsar Railway Junction invariably connects it to rest of India. Khem Karan’s small railway station therefore assumes lot of importance for its commuters. There are, however, no prominent National Highways and State Highway passing through this town. Besides, very few state run buses ply from this small town.

Banking Services in Khem Karan

At present only handful of reputed banks are operating their branches in this town. This invariably ought to mean that banking services here is very unregulated, giving scope to small players like money lenders, chit funds etc to wield their influence.
